The Korat
‘The hairs are smooth, with
roots like clouds and tips like silver. The eyes shine like dewdrops on a lotus
leaf.’ Extract from 'The
Cat Book Poems’, (Ayudhya Period), Bangkok National Library

The Korat
is an ancient breed from Thailand. It is first mentioned in a
Medieval/Renaissance work called ‘The Cat Book Poems,’ now stored in the
Bangkok National Library.
These cats
were traditionally prized for their blue-grey fur with its unusual silvery
tipping, and their wide green eyes. Although other colours of Korat do exist, it
is the ‘blue’ colour which distinguishes them as a true Korat – no others
are currently accepted as pedigree.

Korats
were often given away in pairs as wedding gifts, to bless the union of the Bride
and Groom. They were also used in rain-making ceremonies, being taken in
procession at the end of the dry season to have water poured gently over their
heads while prayers were said for rain. Legend suggests that male Korats were
taken into battle on the shoulders of warriors, to launch themselves, hissing
and growling fiercely, at the enemy!

The first
time a Korat was shown in the UK, in 1896, the judge refused to believe that it
was anything other than 'an inferior quality' blue Siamese, and disqualified the
cat! Korats were never heard of again in the West until the late 1950’s - and
even then, it wasn’t until the 1970’s that any arrived to breed in Britain.
By the
mid-1980’s, the Korat was recognised by the Governing Council of the Cat
Fancy, and allowed Championship status on the show bench.
What’s
it like being owned by a Korat?
Korats are
clever, adventurous and cheeky. They adapt well to indoor life, and love to
follow their humans around the house to ‘help’ with whatever task is in
hand. Korats are also talkative, social animals who love to cuddle up to a
human, another Korat, or a moggie alike. They can be feisty, and prefer to
push other felines around, rather than being pushed around themselves. Korats
are also gentle and sweet - and attention seeking!

Persephonies
Korats
Our blue
girls Hibreeze Arwen, Hibreeze Celebrian and Persephonies Elwing (Arwen, Cally
and Elwing) are our breeding queens. Our kittens are reared in a safe, loving environment
with dogs and moggies too. The kittens leave mum at 13-14 weeks of age,
fully innoculated and insured, with the name prefix Persephonies. Our kittens
are all born blue (at the moment no Thai Lilacs or Blue Points). Their eyes
eventually turn from amber to a beautiful pale green, which denotes maturity. As
they increase in years many Korats "cob out" and reach their full splendor.

Interested
in Korats? Or perhaps viewing kittens with mum at home, or just fancy a
cat-chat?
